Frequently Asked Questions

How do I request free biopsy supplies?
We provide complimentary biopsy submission kits — including specimen bottles with 10% neutral-buffered formalin, patient history forms, and shipping supplies — at no charge to your practice. Please fill out our form or contact our office at office@bluegrassoralpathology.com to request kits.
What is your turnaround time for biopsy results?
For standard soft tissue biopsies, our board-certified oral pathologist delivers most pathological diagnoses within 24 to 48 hours of specimen receipt. Exceptions apply for bony tissues requiring decalcification or special stains.
Where should I send the biopsy specimens?
Please secure the sample in the provided 10% formalin container and label it clearly with the patient's full name, date of birth, date of collection, and clinical history. Put the labeled formalin jar into our white shipping tubes (supplied) and send samples via our provided postage-paid mailing envelopes. If you have multiple samples to send, please put them all into one shipping bag, as this saves us on shipping costs. Thank you!
How do I get the results?
The easiest way to receive reports is by signing up for portal access through our office. Please contact our office (859-407-7025 or office@bluegrassoralpathology.com) to discuss how to obtain portal access. Once you have provider portal access, you are even able to create a case before you send it and attach images or insurance information securely. When the case arrives, we match it with the specimen.
How do you handle patient billing and insurance?
Our laboratory accepts most medical insurance carriers. To expedite processing, please provide a clear photocopy or upload the patient's medical insurance cards alongside the specimen.
Why are you asking me to sign up for PECOS if I do not participate in Medicare?
Enrolling in PECOS allows our office to submit claims to Medicare on behalf of your Medicare-eligible patients. This means patients can receive the reimbursement they are entitled to for out-of-network care, while you maintain your non-participating status, avoid accepting Medicare assignment, and continue your standard private-pay policies.
How do I send a case to you for consult?
Please contact the laboratory at the address or phone number listed on the original biopsy report. Typically, laboratories must have a signed order asking for the slide to be sent out. Request that the lab send the slide(s) to: Bluegrass Oral Pathology, 80 Codell Drive, Ste. 240, Lexington, KY 40509.
How do I send a slide from your lab for review by my treating doctor or another pathologist?
Please have the doctor send a signed order to us via fax (859-407-7060) or secure email (office@bluegrassoralpathology.com). Include the address to which you want the slides sent, and we will ship them.
I have clinical photos or x-rays to include with a biopsy. Should I send those with the specimen?
Definitely! Images are very helpful in diagnosing cases. If you have portal access, you can upload the photos directly into a created pending case, or you may send your images to photos@bluegrassoralpathology.com. To avoid secure links, please send the image with a patient code along with the doctor's name, and we will match the case when it arrives.
Do you see patients?
No. We only provide histopathology laboratory services.
